Literacy – visit the public library weekly. Spend time browsing through books in the children’s section with your child. Get your child his/her own library card.

Mathematics – play counting games such as “how many doors are in our house?” “How many tires on our car?”

Language development – give your child a small object like a wash cloth or stuffed animal. Ask him/her to place the item in various spots. For example, “Place the washcloth on top of your head.” “Place the stuffed animal beside your book.” “Place the toy under the kitchen table.”

Learning development – read simple poems together. Listen for rhyming words. Think of your own.

Problem solving – make up patterns such as clap, clap, wave. Have your child repeat the pattern.

Personal information – ask your child to tell someone how old he/she is.

Small muscle development – assemble an art supply box, including scissors, glue, markers, crayons and paper. Together explore with these materials. When you and your child are comfortable, have your child create art independently.

Large muscle development – play hopscotch with your child on your driveway or patio. You can draw it with chalk.
